What to expect at a deli
Delis and sandwich shops are a lunch institution: Jewish-style delis with pastrami and corned beef piled high, Italian delis with hoagies and imported cold cuts, sub shops, Philadelphia cheesesteak stands and modern sandwich counters. Many also sell prepared salads, soups and grocery items.
What to order
- Pastrami or corned beef on rye – the classic Jewish deli order
- Italian sub or hoagie – cured meats, provolone and oil and vinegar
- Cheesesteak – ask for it “wit” onions in Philadelphia
- Reuben – corned beef, Swiss, sauerkraut and Russian dressing
Good to know
- Lunchtime lines move fast if you know your order before you reach the counter.
- Many delis close in the late afternoon – check before planning a dinner visit.
- Half sandwiches with soup are a common, lighter option.
